Famous YouTuber MrBeast lost money on his most successful video

YouTuber MrBeast has revealed that he has finally made a loss on his biggest video to date, despite hitting record numbers. The online star, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, rose to fame with a 2021 video in which he portrayed the quests from the popular Netflix series Squid Game.

At the time, Donaldson claimed to give away more than $1.5 million in prizes, bring in 456 contestants (who would replicate those from the show), and put them up against real-life versions of games such as Red Light, Green Light; tug-of-war; a marbles game; a glass-jumping challenge; a honeycomb game; and a final showdown.

Nothing could happen to the contestants as everything was conducted under maximum security measures. Elimination from the game was symbolized by the slamming of the red paint. In an interview with The Yard podcast a few months ago, Donaldson reflected on this impressive and ambitious stunt and admitted that it was ultimately a losing video.

“$4.2 million to make the Octopus game… They said you made $1.5 million from advertising, $2 million from your sponsor for that and then $700,000 for merch – so you made $4.2 million, so then you would be in the black, is that right or not?” the YouTuber was asked.

“It was supposed to be a $2 million video, which was crazy for us. We were like, ‘We’re going to go headfirst, we’re going to spend two million dollars on this. And then you spend $1.5 million and you’re like, ‘Oh shit…’ This is going to be a $3 million project, and now it’s a $4 million project and it’s still growing,” he said.

Within 60 minutes of posting, the video had garnered more than five million views, and at the time of this writing, it already has 399 million views. After the video was posted, however, some other users didn’t find it as entertaining given the underlying truthfulness of the show and its impoverished contestants.
