The second part of the spectacular sci-fi adaptation Dune will hit the cinemas in six months
CinemaCon attendees have already seen the reportedly breathtaking trailer for the second part of Dune. At least the exciting first footage has been released online.
Dune, the sequel adapting approximately the second half of Frank Herbert’s literary sci-fi classic, will return to screens on November 2. CinemaCon attendees have now had a chance to see the first spectacular trailer, and Vanity Fair magazine has released a few shots showing off familiar and new characters.
The second part of Dune will follow Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he learns the ways of the native inhabitants of the planet Arrakis called the Fremen and wages war against the galactic emperor Shaddam IV. At his side throughout is the Fremen woman Chani (Zendaya), who forms a romantic but also deeper spiritual relationship with him. Paul’s primary desire is for revenge, while Chani’s main desire is to protect and liberate her people. Director Denis Villeneuve himself sees their relationship as central to the film.
While the first part of Dune was more of a taster, the second part, which follows directly on from it, is meant to be the main course with everything. That means even more scale and a lot more action and battles for the most precious thing in the galaxy – spice melange and survival. Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, for example, will play an important role in all of this alongside the central pair, the returning Harkonnens and the Emperor. The daughter of Shaddam IV is also a member of the Bene Gesserit, a religious-political group that predicts the fall of her father’s reign.
From the brutal House Harkonnen, we see a new Prince Feydu-Rautha with the face of Austin Butler. Villeneuve describes his character as somewhere between a psychotic serial killer and Mick Jagger. And let’s not forget Léa Seydoux as Margot Fenring from Bene Gesserit. Although we visit a planet we’ve seen before in the new film, the director promises entirely new environments or a ride on a massive sandworm, filmed for the most part virtually.
