WhatsApp now lets you sign in from multiple devices to a single phone number
WhatsApp now supports more than one phone to connect to a single phone account.
WhatsApp finally introduces support for signing in from multiple devices for a single phone number. Mark Zuckerberg announced the introduction of this feature on Facebook and Instagram. “Starting today, you can sign in to the same WhatsApp account on up to four phones,” he said.
WhatsApp said the feature will roll out to all users in the coming weeks. Until now, users could only use one WhatsApp account on one phone and several accompanying computing devices. With the new rollout, users’ messages will be synced across devices, including additional phones. So even if one device is off, they will be able to access the app on other devices.
WhatsApp is one of the largest messaging services with over 2 billion users. However, it has so far lacked support for multiple phones as it supports full end-to-end encryption for chats and calls. The company has started testing multi-device compatibility as early as 2021 with select beta users. At the time, Meta (then known as Facebook) said it had developed new technology to sync messages across devices while maintaining end-to-end encryption protection. Other competitors, such as Telegram and Messenger, offered multi-device message syncing but did not have support for end-to-end encryption.
In 2022, WhatsApp began making multi-device features available to everyone. However, it did not support multiple phones. WhatsApp also introduced a new way to connect devices using a one-time code. “By entering your mobile number on the WhatsApp website, you can now get a one-time code that you can use to link devices instead of scanning a QR code on your mobile phone. We will make this feature available for more connected devices in the future,” the company said in a blog post.
