Unobtrusive dystopian sci-fi scores on Netflix. Audiences discovered it after 3 years
Curious things have been happening on the streaming service Netflix these days. A title that has been on the service for 3 years has made it into the top ten most watched films. The film Code 8 tells the story of four percent of people with superpowers who are bullied by robot police officers.
April 11, 2020 is the date when Netflix added the sci-fi film Code 8 to its lineup, but it’s only now trending properly and has even made it to the top 10 most watched movies on the streaming service. As per the platform’s FlixPatrol data, the film has had several eighth-place finishes and has even made it to the fifth and fourth positions within the movie rankings in the last two days. A decent performance for a film that has been on the streamer’s menu for a few years, with no one showing much interest in it. The joke, however, is that audiences are de facto rediscovering it, as FlixPatrol data proves that the film was trending early on in its rollout. So what has changed after all these years?
The fact that the film finally has a complete Czech localization may be a major advantage, but Netflix may have also tweaked its recommendation algorithm a bit to make the titles more visible. Why? The reason is simple, because two years ago it bought the rights to a sequel, which is expected to be released globally this year. So it seems that he’s making a nice little soup to spread awareness and not shoot the sequel into the ground. For those who don’t know, Code 8 is an adaptation of the sci-fi short film of the same name, telling the story of a dystopian world where 4 percent of humans are born with superpowers that they use to steal. One of them is a character with the face of Robbie Amell, who joins a group of criminals to cure his mother’s illness. However, he finds himself facing a special unit hunting down people with exceptional abilities.
