Man spent six months planning the murder of an opponent in Counter-Strike
A Counter-Strike player in France spent six months plotting revenge on the man who beat him in a knife fight in the game. In the end, his revenge didn’t just take place virtually.
Twenty-year-old Julien Barreaux from Cambrai “stabbed” his character in Counter-Strike late last year against another man known only as “Mikhael”. Enraged by this destruction of his talent, Barreaux spent six months searching for him in the real world.
When he finally found the victim, Barreaux knocked on his front door and when Mikhael opened it to welcome him, he “plunged a kitchen knife into his chest.” It missed his heart by an inch. A local police officer told the court that “Barreaux was arrested within the hour and told us he wanted to see his rival disposed of for killing his character”.
The judge, who jailed him for two years on a charge of grievous bodily harm, said of Barreaux: “You are a menace to society. Frankly, I am frightened by the disproportionate reaction you might provoke if someone on the street looked at you the wrong way.”
It’s a sign that virtual games unfortunately have real-world implications, with some people unable to distinguish between the real world and the world of virtual games. Nowadays, however, gamers can make a lot of money with their streaming. If the real world is directly linked to the virtual game, we can see how this can have negative consequences.
