Collagen boom: How the protein is changing the world of dietary supplements and rejuvenating skin
Actress Jitka Schneider has become the face of a collagen powder promotion, with her YouTube video recommending the protein to strengthen skin and improve appearance. The trend around collagen in dietary supplements has seen a significant rise, although exact statistics are lacking.
Experts estimate that among all dietary supplements, collagen accounts for 5% of the market. Companies offering these products confirm an increase in interest and sales. The collagen boom is not cheap, however, and a daily dose can cost around a thousand crowns, with offers of up to two thousand crowns. Company accounts attest to growing business success, as in the case of NutraQ, which earned over 35 million crowns in 2021 on sales of 172 million. Specialty food experts estimate that collagen products may account for up to 5% of total dietary supplement sales.
Collagen, an essential protein that forms the building blocks of connective tissues, provides positive benefits for skin, hair, nails and slows aging. Research confirms that hydrolyzed collagen can reduce wrinkles and increase skin hydration. Experts recommend the use of collagen in the form of dietary supplements, where the important factor is the selection of the type of collagen and the control of the size of the collagen fibers in the product.
