Banning deepfake: Biden’s response to the threat of artificial intelligence in politics
Joe Biden has expressed his intention to ban the use of artificial intelligence to mimic the human voice. This announcement came in response to the increasing cases of misuse of artificial intelligence, especially in the form of mass fraudulent phone calls in the US.
The issue stems from a recent case where telephone robots, using a mock US presidential voice, tried to persuade voters not to vote in the upcoming presidential election. This incident highlights the dangers of artificial intelligence in manipulating public opinion.
Biden’s intention to ban this use of AI is part of a broader effort to regulate AI and protect citizens from its misuse. The proposed legislation, called The Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits (DEFIANCE) Act, aims to prevent the dissemination of fake nude photos and other explicit deepfake content.
Such steps are in line with efforts by other governments and organisations around the world, including the European Union, which has adopted a draft Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA) that sets out binding rules for the use of AI in critical sectors such as healthcare, transport and law enforcement. The Act also prohibits some specific uses of AI, such as biometric identification and emotion recognition, within the EU.
