American brothers accused of stealing $25 million worth of cryptocurrency
Brothers Anton and James Peraire-Bueno, former students at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), are facing serious fraud and money laundering charges after stealing millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency. According to the BBC, they face up to 20 years in prison.
It is unusual for graduates of a respected university like MIT to slip into a criminal career. Yet Anton (24) and James (28) Peraire-Bueno succumbed to temptation and stole $25 million (£570 million) worth of the cryptocurrency Ethereum.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said the brothers used a complex and sophisticated plan they had been preparing for months. The act itself then took only seconds.
According to the BBC, the brothers used their expertise in mathematics and computer science to access pending private transactions and modify them to their advantage, pocketing a significant amount of cryptocurrency. They now face serious charges that could lead to prison sentences of up to 20 years.
