China leads in patents for generative artificial intelligence, says UN report

According to a UN report, China is the world leader in the number of patents related to generative artificial intelligence (AI). Between 2014 and 2023, over 38,000 patents in this area were filed in China, about six times more than the United States, which is in second place. In total, more than 54,000 patents related to generative AI were filed during the period under review, including 38,210 in China and 6,286 in the US. South Korea ranked third, followed by Japan and India.

Generative AI involves systems capable of generating text and images based on training on large-scale data. This type of AI gained popularity especially after the free availability of ChatGPT, a chat program developed by OpenAI with support from Microsoft.

Daren Tang, director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), said that generative AI is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to fundamentally change the way we work, live and play. WIPO hopes that the analysis of patent data will contribute to a better understanding of the development of this technology and its future directions. “In this way, we can help policymakers guide the development of generative AI to deliver collective benefits and ensure that human beings remain at the centre of innovation and creative systems,” Tang said.

However, analyst Nestor Maslej of Stanford’s Human-centered Artificial Intelligence Institute (HAI) pointed out that patent analysis does not provide a complete picture of the situation in the field of generative AI. The key, he said, is who is creating the best models based on generative AI and where they are coming from. In this respect, the United States appears to have a significant lead.
