Driving revolution, Ohio introduces digital driver’s licenses, Europe delays
Although drivers in the Czech Republic have not been required to carry a physical driving licence or a small technical licence for some time, there are still situations where it is advantageous to have a driving licence at least in digital form. A digital version of a driving licence can be useful, for example, for identity verification or other administrative tasks where it is necessary to prove the right to drive.
An example of this innovation is drivers in the US state of Ohio who can store their driver’s licence in the Wallet app on their iPhone or Apple Watch. With this move, Ohio has become the fifth state in the US to offer this option to its citizens. Apple introduced this functionality back in September 2021 and it has been gradually expanding to other states since then.
A digital driver’s license stored in the Wallet app on an Apple device not only makes life easier for drivers, but also contributes to greater safety and convenience. If a physical license is lost or stolen, the driver still has access to a digital version, which can make dealing with unpleasant situations easier. For an idea of what such a digital licence looks like, you can take a look at the attached post on social network X.
Unfortunately, the implementation of a digital driving licence in the European Union via Google Wallet is not yet on the horizon. The legislative environment in the EU is complex and adjusting it for the introduction of digital licences takes time and effort. Nevertheless, there is hope that European countries will one day also see this modern technology, which could simplify and streamline many aspects of drivers’ daily lives. For the time being, however, we have to be content with traditional forms of driving licences and wait for legislative changes that would allow them to be digitised.
