Germany is introducing temporary border controls at all its land borders from this coming Monday, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has announced.

The measure is aimed at curbing illegal migration and strengthening internal security, particularly in view of the threat of Islamist terrorism and cross-border crime. Germany has been controlling its border with Austria since 2015 and with the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland since last October. The borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark will now also be checked for six months.

Faeser has already informed the European Commission of these measures, as required by the rules of the Schengen area, where border controls should be exceptional. Faeser said the checks will be necessary until the new European migration and asylum system is operational and the EU’s external borders are better protected.

This measure does not fundamentally change anything for the Czech Republic, Interior Minister Vít Rakušan (STAN) said, as it is a continuation of the random checks already in place. In recent weeks, Germany has been discussing tightening its migration policy, prompted by the August terrorist attack in Solingen, where a failed asylum seeker killed three people and injured eight others.

The debate intensified after the elections in the East German states, where the anti-immigration AfD party won more than 30% of the vote. After the Solingen attack, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government presented a “security package” to tighten migration policy, including stricter rules on deportations and the fight against terrorism.
