Dacia Bigster: the biggest and most modern SUV comes with hybrid drive and robust design
The Bigster is the largest and most powerful model ever introduced by Dacia and is considered to be the carmaker’s major step into the compact SUV segment. Its design and mechanical features are reminiscent of the much-loved Duster, but the Bigster is larger and roomier, aiming to appeal to a wider range of customers looking for a rugged and practical SUV with more features. This new model should satisfy those who prefer an SUV with more interior space but don’t want to sacrifice compact and durable looks.
In terms of dimensions, the Bigster measures 4.57 metres in length, which is 230 mm longer than the Duster, while the width remains the same at 1.81 metres. The height of the car is 1.71 metres. While the Bigster shares many design elements with the Duster, including a robust aesthetic line, there have been some important changes. These include a new front bumper, extended wheelbase and longer rear overhang, which give the car a sleeker and more dynamic look.
The car’s interior takes inspiration from the Duster, but offers more modern features that improve comfort and safety. At the core is a 10.1-inch infotainment display, which is standard on all trim levels, and an optional digital instrument cluster in 7- and 10-inch versions. Dacia has also focused on improving acoustic comfort, so the Bigster has been fitted with an acoustic windscreen and better engine sound insulation, which reduces cabin noise.
From a practical point of view, the Bigster offers generous space for both passengers and luggage. The rear seats provide more legroom than the Duster, which increases passenger comfort, especially on longer journeys. The 667-litre boot is large enough for family travel or longer trips. Although there is no talk of a seven-seat version yet, the five-door, five-seat model meets the needs of most users.
The car’s technology features also include dual-zone climate control with rear-seat air vents and adjustable lumbar support for the passenger, which adds comfort on long trips.
In terms of engines, the Dacia Bigster offers four different powertrain options that combine performance, efficiency and environmental friendliness. The first and most significant option is the new Hybrid 155 engine. This system combines a four-cylinder petrol engine with 107 hp, two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery. The powertrain includes an electrified automatic transmission that has four gears for the combustion engine and two for the electric motor. The result is increased power and torque, setting the Bigster apart from models such as the Duster and Jogger, which use the 140 hybrid engine. The new system also brings improvements in fuel consumption and emissions, with a 6% reduction in emissions thanks to optimised engine speed management.
Other options include the TCe 140, which is a 1.2-litre engine with a mild hybrid system and a six-speed manual gearbox. This three-cylinder engine is designed to provide a balance of power and economy. The Bigster also introduces an ECO-G 140 version that relies on LPG power, for the first time combined with a mild hybrid system, providing both lower emissions and greater efficiency.
For those who prefer all-wheel drive, Dacia offers a TCe 130 4×4 variant with four-wheel drive, again mated to a 12-speed manual gearbox. This version is aimed at customers who require a higher towing capacity and the ability to drive on more challenging terrain.
The Dacia Bigster is expected to hit the market early next year, while the price has not yet been disclosed. The model represents an important step for Dacia as it looks to expand its portfolio and offer a larger and more powerful SUV for discerning customers. With its rugged design, spaciousness and advanced technology, the Bigster could also compete with established brands in the compact SUV segment.
