Prague, 13 November 2024 – Unicorn Systems in cooperation with PREdistribuce and LEEF Technologies has completed a project for efficient management of charging stations for electric vehicles and optimization of the distribution network. The project, which was co-funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TA CR), aims to prepare the distribution network in urban areas for the expected increase in electromobility, thus contributing to a more sustainable energy economy.

The increase in electromobility supported by the National Renewal Plan from 2021 onwards places greater demands on the capacity of distribution networks. The Unicorn Systems project, in collaboration with PREdistribution and LEEF Technologies, delivers an innovative solution that enables efficient management of grid operations. Through optimization, it will ensure sufficient capacity for the growing number of charging stations. The success of the project was achieved thanks to the close cooperation between Unicorn Systems, PREdistribution and LEEF Technologies, with each partner contributing its know-how. Unicorn Systems developed the software, LEEF Technologies provided consulting and project management and PREdistribution provided the infrastructure for testing.

The project was carried out in three main phases: in 2021 the concept was developed, in 2022 implementation began and in June 2024 the solution was deployed for testing. Unicorn Systems’ software enables the dynamic management of EV charging thanks to advanced algorithms that use data from metering systems to adjust the performance of stations according to current conditions, preventing grid congestion.

“Europe, such as the Netherlands, is already facing restrictions on charging station operations due to grid congestion. We believe that our technology can prevent similar problems,” said Jan Konrád, Chief Commercial Officer at Unicorn Systems. “The distribution network needs to be prepared for the needs of the future, and this project is one of the important steps that can help us do that,” added Stanislav Votruba, Head of Network Concepts at PREdistribution. “Flexible access to charging can contribute to a faster development of electromobility, and we are pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in a research project with important partners,” added Martin Cmíral, Director of LEEF Technologies.

The results of the project show that optimization based on network topology and the ability to take advantage of the flexibility of load points can play a key role in the future development of electromobility. This innovation not only ensures grid stability but also reduces the costs associated with reinforcing the grid, helping to address the challenges of electromobility and enabling wider use of this technology in other areas of energy management. Thanks to open standards such as OpenADR, the solution can also be applied to other energy sources, supporting the transition towards a more sustainable and flexible energy infrastructure.
