Onion triumph: Families of Sandy Hook victims humble Alex Jones’ conspiracy empire

The satirical newspaper The Onion has acquired the assets and platform of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, including his famous Infowars website.

This transfer of assets was completed through the support of the families of the victims of the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. During this tragic event, 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 were killed. The families, who for years have been the target of hate and threats due to Jones’ claims that the massacre was “staged” and the parents of the victims “hired actors,” are now celebrating a partial victory.

Jones, considered one of America’s greatest conspirators, has been spreading misinformation for years through Infowars. His shows, broadcast on hundreds of radio stations and shared on social media, influenced millions of people. Jones claimed that the Sandy Hook shooting was orchestrated by then-President Barack Obama to manipulate public opinion and push for stricter gun control laws. These claims sparked a wave of hate attacks against the families of the victims, with people threatening violence, sending abusive messages and some going so far as to desecrate the graves of the murdered children.

Ben Collins plans to work with Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting gun violence. This new direction for Infowars should help raise awareness and combat the misinformation that has long been a pillar of Jones’ work.
