The United States is planning a major investment in data and energy infrastructure focused on artificial intelligence. President Donald Trump, along with representatives of OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank, announced the launch of the $500 billion Stargate project.

At the press conference, Trump stressed that the field of AI is experiencing rapid development and that this project will help the US maintain its leadership in the technology sector. According to Sam Altman, head of OpenAI, this is a key step towards the development of advanced artificial intelligence, which will have a major impact on the future of humanity. Oracle’s Larry Ellison said that the project is already underway with the construction of ten data centres, with funding primarily provided by Japan’s SoftBank along with the United Arab Emirates investment fund MGX.

The Stargate project has been in the works since 2024, but its official unveiling is linked to the Trump administration. During the first year, an investment of $100 billion is planned and the total budget will reach $500 billion. The US government will not financially enter the project, but intends to accelerate its implementation through deregulation and the removal of bureaucratic obstacles. The energy intensity of AI is a key theme of the project. Trump has announced that he will use executive action to make it easier to obtain the necessary sources of electricity, for example from nuclear power. Microsoft is already considering reopening the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant as a power source for AI computing.

ARM, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle and OpenAI are the technology partners of the project. Although OpenAI has so far worked primarily with Microsoft, the company is now expanding its portfolio of partners and looking for additional sources of computing power.

The Stargate project is part of a broader trend of strategic investment in artificial intelligence. In the past, the US government has sought to boost semiconductor and advanced chip manufacturing, for example with the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. Joe Biden’s administration has also tightened export restrictions on AI chips, affecting not only China but also some European countries.According to Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s chief executive, the advent of general AI, and subsequently superintelligence, is imminent and will bring disruptive technological innovations. With this project, the Trump administration is trying to ensure that the United States is at the forefront of this revolution.
