Meta attracts creators from TikTok, offers thousands of dollars !
Meta in the US is taking advantage of the uncertain situation surrounding TikTok to attract users. It is offering up to five thousand dollars to successful creators who meet certain conditions. US influencers who create popular Instagram and Facebook accounts can receive a financial reward based on their activity rating on the platform.
Although Meta does not state that the initiative is aimed at TikTok, the BBC says its timing suggests an effort to exploit uncertainty about the app’s future in the US. It is unclear whether President Donald Trump will be able to keep TikTok in the country. Approximately 170 million people in the US use the platform and a potential ban would mean finding a new alternative.
TikTok is facing pressure from the US government, which has urged it to separate from its parent company ByteDance or else be banned in the US. This is due to concerns about the potential influence of the Chinese government, which could gain access to user data or influence content. The ban actually went into effect for a short time the day before Trump’s inauguration, but the new president gave TikTok another 90 days to resolve the situation.
Meta calls this program the “Breakthrough Bonus Program” and is only for US residents over the age of 18 who have an account on another social network and are not part of another Meta rewards program. Creators must actively publish content on Facebook and Instagram through the mobile app. To receive the monthly bonus, they must post 20 Reels on Facebook and 10 on Instagram on different days.
In addition to this incentive, Meta is offering up to $50,000 per month to major TikTok creators if they post their content on Reels as a priority. Despite these incentives, however, most influencers have yet to make the mass switch to Meta’s platform.
Meta is trying to compete with TikTok in other ways. In January, it announced the launch of a new video editing app to rival CapCut, ByteDance’s tool. It is also testing its own version of TikTok Shop, where users will be able to add links directly to videos. Meta has also made visual changes to Instagram, where originally square posts have been changed to rectangular ones, similar to TikTok. However, this change sparked a negative reaction from users, which was admitted by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri.
