Czech invention at MWC 2025: mobile signal propagation drone scores points in Barcelona

German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom, owner of Czech T-Mobil, is also presenting itself at MWC 2025, the world’s largest mobile technology fair. It is here, in cooperation with the Czech company, that it is presenting a revolutionary Czech invention – a drone capable of spreading mobile signals.

MWC is an annual showcase of the most advanced mobile technologies, so it is a great success that Deutsche Telekom has chosen an innovation from the Czech Republic for its presentation. “The flying antenna drone provides reliable connectivity even in inaccessible terrain or in crisis situations. It effectively complements Deutsche Telekom’s wide range of tools for ensuring mobile communication in various conditions,” said Claudia Nematová, Member of the Board of Management for Technology and Innovation.

The drone was not only presented in Barcelona, but was already tested in the Czech Republic in February during the traditional cross-country skiing race Jizerská 50. This event, which attracted over 23,000 visitors, provided ideal conditions to test its ability to provide a stable mobile signal in places with a high concentration of people.

A drone with military roots reimagined for telecommunications

At first glance, it resembles a small plane, but instead of a crew, it uses advanced technology. With a wingspan of five metres, it has been in production in the Czech Republic for ten years and is primarily used for military purposes, for example to guard the border between Slovakia and Ukraine. “It is used for border and coastal protection, monitoring strategic infrastructure or calibrating airport radio beacons,” explained Ladislav Semetkovský, director of Primoco UAV SE, the company that developed the aircraft.

With the exception of two components – a Norwegian geolocation device and a Spanish autopilot – the drone is completely manufactured in the Czech Republic. In cooperation with T-Mobile, it has been adapted to spread mobile signals where conventional transmitters are not sufficient, for example in protected areas or during natural disasters.

“It is an innovative solution that helps to ensure mobile signal where it is missing or where it is lost,” says Otakar Mráz, T-Mobile’s mobile network manager. The drone can cover up to 20 km² with a signal from a height and its endurance in the air is 15 hours. At a speed of 120 km/h, it can fly up to 1,800 kilometres.

MWC 2025: the World Showcase of Technology Innovation

MWC 2025 officially starts on 3 March and runs until 6 March at Barcelona’s Fira Gran Via exhibition centre. However, press presentations are already taking place during the weekend before the opening. Every year, this prestigious event attracts the biggest technology players and innovators from around the world, and this year, Czech technology that could be a breakthrough in mobile connectivity shines among them.
