AirPods helped catch hit-and-run driver
Hit-and-run cyclists are a disgusting but unfortunately common occurrence. Fifteen-year-old Lochlan Nicol of Jensen Beach, Florida, experienced this firsthand when he rode his bike to a gas station to get ice cream. Little did he know what was in store for him, and what role his AirPods would play in it.
Suddenly, he was hit by an SUV, with his head crashing through the back window of the car and one of his wireless AirPods falling out of his ear. Although the driver of the SUV stopped for a moment and pulled the injured boy off the road, he then fled the scene. Lochlan suffered fractures to his nose, cheekbone, and orbital bone, and a deep cut on his leg. After being airlifted to the hospital, his girlfriend noticed that one earphone was missing from his AirPods case. Using Apple’s Find app, she located it about 6 miles from the accident scene.
They contacted the police with this information and the injured Lochlan provided them with the location of the AirPod. “With the handset, we were able to locate the suspect right at his home in Jensen Beach,” a police spokesman said. “It was a lucky coincidence that helped us a lot.” Information gathered led officers to the Jensen Beach home, where they found a silver Hyundai Santa Fe with a broken rear window. The owner of the car, 49-year-old Peter Bradford Swing, was arrested and the lost AirPod was found. Swing admitted that he fled the scene because of his drug history and impending sentence. He now faces up to 15 years in prison for failing to stop at a serious injury accident. “It’s unbelievable,” said Lochlan’s father, Derek Nicol. “People call it karma. Maybe it really is karma that it happened like this. It’s just weird.”
