A company invested billions of dollars into a project aimed at propelling them into an entirely new industry. However, the project faced numerous challenges almost from the beginning, leading Apple to change team leadership and strategy multiple times.

Apple, the American tech giant, has halted work on its electric car project. Some employees from the project, which began in 2014, have been reassigned to the artificial intelligence (AI) division. This information was reported internally by Apple today, according to Bloomberg, citing informed sources. The tech company declined to comment on the termination of the ambitious project.

Around 2000 people were working on the development of the electric vehicle. They were surprised to learn that the project would gradually come to an end and that some of them would be reassigned to the AI division. The team includes several hundred hardware engineers and automotive designers. It’s possible that they will be able to apply for positions in other departments of the company. There may also be layoffs, but it’s unclear to what extent, according to Bloomberg.

The company invested billions of dollars into the project aimed at propelling them into an entirely new industry. The original goal was to create a fully autonomous electric vehicle with a limousine-like interior and voice-controlled navigation. However, the project faced numerous challenges almost from the beginning, leading Apple to change team leadership and strategy multiple times. The decision to terminate it was made by the company’s leadership in recent weeks. Bloomberg reported a month ago that the project had reached a critical point. The last internally discussed approach was to delay the launch of the vehicle until 2028 and reduce the vehicle’s autonomy level from level four to level two plus. There are six levels of autonomous vehicles – from zero to five. The most advanced is a fully autonomous vehicle.
