Apple must verify app developers in App Store, threatens app recalls

Apple is subject to new European Union (EU) regulations. Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), Apple must independently verify the contact details of app developers on the App Store platform. This information must then be transparently displayed in the store so that users can better assess the trustworthiness of developers.

The European Commission (EC) requires Apple and other companies to verify and disclose the contact details of all vendors offering their products on digital stores, including the App Store, in accordance with the Digital Services Act. This requirement is also likely to affect Google Play and other digital platforms. The principle is simple: app developers are considered “sellers”, regardless of whether they offer paid apps or free apps with microtransactions or advertising. The only exception is apps that are not charged in any form.

Thus, Apple will need to recover and verify the address, phone number, and email address of most developers in the App Store. For organizations, phone number and email verification will suffice. EU users will be able to find this information directly under the description of each app in the App Store.

However, some developers are unhappy with this change. Smaller app developers often don’t have specific work contacts and will have to disclose their personal information. The new rules go into effect on October 16 this year, and if developers don’t provide the necessary data by February 17 next year, Apple will be forced to remove their apps from the App Store.
