Predict illness up to three days in advance by tracking health indicators on your Apple watch!
Smartwatches and phones have features that you’ll find in the manufacturers’ technical specifications, but some you’ll only discover in everyday use. This is the case with the Vitals app on the Apple Watch, which tracks key health indicators and can warn you up to three days in advance of an impending illness !
The app monitors heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygenation, wrist temperature and sleep duration. Previously, Apple’s devices reported on long-term trends, but Vitals can now compare sleep data to seven days ago to detect changes in health more quickly.
On Reddit, users have found that the app often picks up changes that may indicate impending illness up to three days in advance. The warnings may not be 100 percent accurate and don’t apply to all cases, so Apple doesn’t list this feature as a major benefit, but user experience shows that the app’s algorithms are useful. Many have described how Vitals detected elevated body temperature before the flu or changes in breathing rate before the onset of the coronavirus.
The accuracy of the warnings varied – for some users, the app provided warnings several days in advance, while for others it only detected changes on the day the illness broke out. Every person is different, so not everyone’s results are the same, but most users confirm that the app warned of health fluctuations in advance.
If you have an Apple Watch and an iPhone and want to monitor for signs of illness, you need to monitor your sleep for at least a week with the watch. Make sure you have notifications activated in the Vitals section of the Apple Watch app so you can react to any changes in a timely manner.
