Škoda Auto unveils the revolutionary Elroq compact electric SUV
After a long time, Škoda Auto, the largest Czech carmaker, is coming up with a completely new model and model range that expands its existing offer. Although the new versions of the Octavia and Kodiaq models introduced by the carmaker are not mere facelifts, they are still upgraded versions of previously launched models. Now, however, Skoda is coming up with something completely new – an all-new compact SUV range, with the Elroq being the first representative.
This new model is designed in the spirit of the “Modern Solid” design language that the carmaker has introduced as the basis for future electric vehicles. The “Modern Solid” design language first appeared in the Vision 7S and will now be developed across the entire range of production cars. Skoda’s chief designer Oliver Stefani said that all of Skoda’s new electric cars will bear the hallmarks of this language, making them recognisable at a glance as Skoda electric cars.
Interestingly, although the market situation has changed since then – for example, in Germany, subsidies for electric cars have ended and sales of electric cars have stagnated – the new Elroq remains an electric car. In fact, its development started at a time when this change was unforeseeable. Even though the market situation has changed and automakers like Skoda may be rethinking their plans for electric mobility, the Elroq remains true to its original concept.
The Elroq will be available in four different versions, differing in power and battery capacity. The base model Elroq 50 will offer rear-wheel drive, a 55 kWh battery, 125 kW of power and a top speed of 160 km/h. The Elroq 60 version adds a larger 63 kWh battery and a higher power output of 150 kW. The most powerful variants, the Elroq 85 and Elroq 85x, will offer an 82 kWh battery and 210 kW or 220 kW of power. The Elroq 85x also adds all-wheel drive, which will be appreciated by customers looking for more power and better traction.
One of the main advantages of the new Elroq is its fast-charging capability. The Elroq 85 and 85x versions offer DC charging of up to 175 kW, meaning the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in less than 28 minutes. Even with AC charging from a Skoda iV Charger home wallbox with up to 11 kW, the battery is fully charged in 5.5 to 8 hours, ensuring convenient charging overnight or during the working day.
The interior of the Elroq is designed with an emphasis on modern technology, spaciousness and sustainable materials. For example, Skoda offers the Loft interior with recycled fibre upholstery in dark melange. Interior technologies include an intuitive 13-inch infotainment system, a 5-inch digital cockpit and a head-up display with augmented reality. These features ensure that driving the Elroq is not only comfortable, but also technologically advanced and fun.
Skoda has also focused on safety in the new model. The Elroq is equipped with up to nine airbags and a range of advanced assistance and safety systems that are now standard in modern cars. An interesting new feature is the ‘trained parking’ function, which allows the car to learn a parking manoeuvre in five different locations with a route of up to 50 metres. The car can then perform this manoeuvre fully automatically, even remotely via the MyŠkoda app, a practical aid for everyday parking in the city.
Although the Elroq is yet to be launched, its official unveiling, without camouflage and with all the details, is scheduled for this autumn. This new model presents Skoda with an opportunity to take its place in the compact SUV market and further develop its range of electric vehicles, despite the current market challenges. We will update you as soon as further information becomes available.
